The Department of English, Linguistics, & Writing Studies (ELWS) at UMD offers expertise in literature, linguistics, rhetoric, and writing, covering areas from fiction and poetry to language structure and rhetorical theory. Our faculty engage in diverse scholarship and creative work, teaching students to read critically, think creatively, and write clearly. ELWS programs emphasize respect for human diversity and prepare students to engage meaningfully as professionals and lifelong learners within complex societies.
