Journalism majors are strongly encouraged to complete one or more internships during their college career. In recent years, Journalism majors have completed internships with local radio and television stations. In fact, The Duluth-Superior television market relies heavily on our students for internships and employment after graduation. When coupled with a rich, local media scene of print and online news organizations, the UMD Journalism program often has more requests for students than we have students to offer. Students are also encouraged to apply their skills in a real world situation through working at campus media (The Bark, KUMD) while attending UMD.
Eligibility for Internships
To be eligible for an internship, students must have:

completed 60 hours of coursework

completed WRIT 1120 or equivalent

completed Journalism 2001 (Introduction to Journalism)

completed Journalism 3700 (Media Law and Ethics)

earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the two WRIT classes

have contacted and filed materials with the Journalism Internship Coordinator, Dr. Jennifer Moore.
Eligibility differs somewhat for different types of internships. Under some circumstances the internship may waive one or more of the eligibility requirements. Keep in mind that the eligibility and completion requirements for internships apply only to those internships for which students earn credit; a student who chooses to not earn credit for an internship may still wish to list the experience on their resume.
