The Tribal Sovereignty Institute (TSI), within the Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, received funding from the Bush Foundation to (1) create a tribal administration handbook for use by American Indian tribes across the country and (2) develop peer reviewed publications and teaching materials on subjects that will support tribal management capabilities.
The Tribal Administration Handbook: A Guide For Native Nations in the United States was published in 2022 by the Michigan State University Press under the Makwa Enewed imprint. The concept, structure, content, and editorial approach for the Handbook emerged through extensive tribal consultation, a thorough review of existing literature, and a far-reaching survey of practitioners and scholars. The Handbook is designed as a readable, accessible volume focused on key areas of tribal administration and governance. It serves practitioners, students, researchers, and community members alike.
The Tribal Administration Handbook is available for purchase directly from MSU Press and from most booksellers. It is also available as a free PDF download for tribal administrators and officials. For access to the no-cost download, send a request to [email protected] using the email address you use for official tribal business.
