Communication Internship Opportunities

Our internship program serves multiple objectives:

  • Helping best position our students for success in identifying, landing, and pursuing a career post-graduation;
  • Providing our students with exposure to exceptional organizations throughout Duluth, and beyond; and
  • Developing working partnerships and relationships with the business community, affording them the opportunity to benefit from hosting and mentoring awesome students who contribute to their operation. Internships - when done right - benefit everyone involved, are becoming more common at all kinds of businesses across the world, and are something many employers expect to see on entry-level applicants' resumes.
  • Contact the Communication coordinator to inquire about an internship: Brian Matuszak

For Students

Our program exists - first and foremost - to provide our students with the resources, tools, experience, and exposure to help position them to be successful academics and budding professionals. Pursuing an internship provides students with numerous benefits, some of which include:

  • 'Real world' exposure to a field of interest - that can't be duplicated in the classroom - which helps students better understand what their career interests may be;
  • Professional experience and references, that will help position students to be stronger professional candidates following graduation;
  • An opportunity for students to grow their professional network, which will play a critical role in their future professional lives;
  • The chance for students to 'test' themselves outside of the classroom, helping them build their confidence as young professionals prepared for life after graduation;
  • And possibly putting themselves in a position to be hired by an organization that they contributed to as an intern.

Students should review UMD's Gold-Pass, for internship and job opportunities posted through UMD and the University of Minnesota system in general; this is the largest repository of opportunities posted by companies specifically interested in considering UMD students for their career and internship opportunities. Below are links to additional information and resources, that we encourage students to review before taking additional steps in the pursuit of an internship through the Communication Department.

For Employers

Our students bring value to any organization - as short term interns or entry level professionals. As interns and entry level professionals our students succeed in a variety of roles and fields, including (but not limited to): Marketing; PR; Project Management; Business Development; Community Outreach; Research; HR; Recruiting/Professional-Staffing; Event Management; Fundraising; Web-Content Design; Relationship Management and many more.

Communication Majors and Minors bring a fundamentally valuable and transferable skill with them to every setting - the ability to understand how to leverage communication as a tool for: achieving goals, influencing people and situations, understanding others, collaborating with others, managing conflict and crises, and effectively conveying information to target audiences. If you're interested in sharing a job or internship opportunity with us, please contact Brian Matuszak to do so, and to discuss what our expectations are of internship hosts. We also encourage you to post any internships or jobs that you need filled with UMD's Gold-Pass.
