The UMD College and Advanced Writing Program takes a rhetorical approach to guide undergraduate students in improving their information literacy, critical thinking, and writing processes at the college level and beyond. Housed within the Department of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies, the College and Advanced Writing Program offers College Writing (WRIT 1120), which is the only course that currently fulfills the Liberal Education Requirement for Writing and Information Literacy. It also offers eight Advanced Writing Courses (WRIT 31xx), which fulfill graduation requirements for most major programs at UMD.*
*Students who major in English, History, and Philosophy can substitute a 3xxx course in their major for Advanced Writing.
A Student-Centered Approach
UMD’s College and Advanced Writing Program (C&AWP) aims to meet each student as an individual learner. We do this by
- learning each student’s name in the first few weeks of the semester
- encouraging students to make specific, measurable, and time-bound goals
- meeting one-on-one with each student to discuss progress on goals, drafts, and projects
- allowing students to ask research questions they find intriguing and personally relevant
- encouraging students to take risks in earlier drafts
- guiding students to locate, evaluate, and use information in ways that are appropriate for a given purpose
- giving students opportunities to communicate and collaborate in academic, professional, and civic contexts
- encouraging students to write with a clear, authentic voice
- allowing students to experience first-hand the ways that writing and revision can enable deep learning and self-discovery
