Language and Culture in China

Language and Culture in China (study abroad) is a 6-week, 6-credit program held during the summer term. Program participants travel to six cities in China—Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Qingdao and Beijing during the six weeks. There they explore the cities, learn Chinese language, experience the culture, taste the local food, and build connections with college students in Qingdao and Beijing. UMD students practice their Chinese language and gain an understanding of the Eastern mindsets that are different from the West. They also witness the fast development of this ancient yet vigorous country. This is a program of exploration into one’s inner world--a chance to build life-long friendships, to appreciate another culture, and to see your own culture in new ways. For most past participants, this is a “life-changing” experience that will be long remembered and cherished.
