Prospective Theatre Students

Welcome!

The award-winning, nationally recognized Department of Theatre at the University of Minnesota Duluth offers two unique undergraduate degree programs: a B.A. in Theatre, and a B.F.A. in Theatre with emphases in Acting, Musical Theatre, Scene Design, Costume Design, Design & Production, Lighting Design, Stage Management, and Technical Theatre. In addition, we offer minors in Theatre, Dance, and Film Studies. The department produces a variety of shows throughout the year, directed by faculty, guest artists, and also students.

Bachelor of Fine ArtsĀ (B.F.A.)

The Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre is for students interested in an in-depth study of Acting, Musical Theatre, Stage Management, or areas of Design and Production.Ā

Applicants interested in UMD Theatre’s B.F.A. program must complete an in-person audition/interview or portfolio review with UMD Theatre faculty, either in Minneapolis, Duluth or onlineĀ (see details below). B.F.A. applicants must also apply and be accepted into the University of Minnesota Duluth before they can audition/interview for UMD Theatre’s B.F.A. program.

Current students who have completed 60 or fewer academic credits may audition/interview for the BFA degree program and if accepted, expect to make regular progress towards graduation.

Current Students who have completed more than 60 academic credits must petition the faculty in writing a minimum of two weeks before scheduling a BFA auditions/interview requesting permission to participate.Ā

Petition form can be found at

B.F.A. Theatre Audition Dates & Audition Requirements

Auditions/Interviews: Students are asked to schedule their audition/interview time through Acceptd, which charges $10 for this service. If you wish, for an additional fee, you may also upload audition/portfolio materials (e.g., headshot resume, audition videos, portfolio materials). Although doing so is not required, it’s an excellent way for UMD faculty to become familiar with your work before your actual on-site audition/interview.Ā

Bachelor of ArtsĀ (B.A.)

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre provides a broad-based liberal arts foundation that allows students to experience various facets of theatre and prepares them for possible careers in fields such as Directing, Playwriting, Theatre Criticism/History, Arts Administration, Theatre Management, Dramaturgy, Performance, Technology and Design.

Because the B.A. is a separate degree that broadly focuses on many facets of theatre, students selecting itĀ need notĀ upload materials on Acceptd andĀ need notĀ audition for the program. To be accepted as a UMD Theatre B.A., you need only be accepted into the University of Minnesota Duluth itself.
