About Theatre

Mission Statement

UMD's Department of Theatre provides academic and professional training in the theatre arts in the Marshall Performing Arts Center (MPAC), which includes a 530-seat flexible thrust/proscenium theatre, a black-box experimental theatre, fully equipped scenic and costume shops, computerized lighting, sound and media projection systems, and studio space for acting, dance and design students.

The Department offers two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). The Department offer minors in Dance, Theatre and Film Studies, as well as a Certificate in Design and Production.

UMD Theatre offers a six-show season annually.  Current Season information is available on the Department's website.

Theatre Program Learning Outcomes

Core
1 - Students effectively demonstrate techniques of creative discovery and creative work.

2 - Students construct, integrate, and apply appropriate knowledge of theatre theory, history and practice to purposefully and intentionally improve their work.
3 - Students develop and apply critical thinking skills in various modes of theatrical work.
4 - Students identify means by which their art can be of service to the greater community.

5 - Students will communicate effectively in writing appropriate to work in the arts.

Bachelor of Arts
1 - Students will determine the application of their degree to their future endeavors.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Performance
1 - Students will master performance techniques to a level of professionalism.

2 - Students demonstrate competence to enter a professional theatre field as a performer.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Design & Production
1 - Students will master design and production techniques to a level of professionalism.

2 - Students demonstrate competence to enter a professional theatre field as a practitioner.
