African & African American Studies

The African and African American Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program that examines the worldwide historical and current experience of African Americans and people of African descent. Our programming will introduce you to the cultures, institutions, and societies in Africa and its Diasporas through diverse course offerings, individualized research activities, advocacy, and community and civic engagement. Our professors are not only dedicated teachers and mentors but are also leading experts in their respective disciplines who incorporate their ground-breaking scholarship into the classroom. The AAAS minor is a great complement to any major field of study and will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly multicultural and diverse world.

African and African American Studies Minor Requirements

The African and African American Studies Minor is 18 credits, consisting of three Core courses  and three Elective courses. 

The Core courses are:

  • AAAS 1101: Introduction to Black Caribbean Studies or AAAS 1102: Introduction to Atlantic Slave Trade
  • AAAS 1103: Introduction to Africa
  • AAAS 1104: Introduction to Black America
