Dr. David Edmund is an Associate Professor and Chair of Music Education at UMD, where he guides experiences in music education foundations, jazz history, music pedagogy, special and adaptive music, and practica, including student teaching. Dr. Edmund serves as the music education liaison with UMD’s Department of Education. Prior to serving at UMD, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Florida and studio trumpet instructor at Manatee College in Bradenton, FL.
Dr. Edmund served two terms as Chair of the Minnesota Society for Music Teacher Education, for which he created partnerships in the development of the Upper Midwest SMTE. He is a current music education consultant for the MN Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB). Edmund's current research centers on the pedagogy of improvisation, socio-cultural enrichment through community-based music, and kinesthetic response to music . David has presented research and given workshops in Taiwan, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, Canada, Scotland, Finland, and throughout the United States. Dr. Edmund is an active jazz trumpet performer in large and small ensembles. He has toured and recorded with chamber winds, jazz, reggae, soul, pop, and rock ensembles.
Before working in higher education, Edmund taught general music, choir, and beginning band for ten years in Florida elementary schools. He possesses certifications in Orff Schülwerk and the Kodály approach. Dr. Edmund’s awards include Ruskin Elementary Teacher of the Year, Outstanding doctoral graduate at the University of Florida, Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant (UF), and UMD School of Fine Arts Outstanding Academic Advisor.
Dr. Edmund currently lives in Duluth, MN with his wife, Dr. Jian-Jun Chen-Edmund, and their beautiful daughter. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Florida, a Master's of Music Education degree (Jazz Studies emphasis) at the University of North Texas, and the Ph.D. in Music Education at the University of Florida, where he was a Presidential Fellow. While at the University of North Texas, Dr. Edmund performed in the renowned One o’ Clock lab band and directed the Six o’ Clock.
