International Education Week is the week of November 16-20. The UMD events are part of a larger national initiative of the US Department of State and Department of Education. The schedule of activities includes films, panel discussions, talks, information sessions, a trivia night, and many other interesting events. World Languages and Cultures faculty and study abroad alumni are involved in presenting many of these sessions, and there are many others that will be of interest to WLC students. Here are some of them:
Monday, Nov 16th, 5-6 pm: Startup Guftagu, a conversation in a 3D virtual world facilitated by Cultural Entrepreneurship professor Aparna Katre. There is a podcast that is recommended preparation.
Monday, Nov 16th, 7-8 pm: discussion of the Spanish film, Asier and I. The film can be streamed anytime between Nov 13-22. The discussion will be led by WLC professors Jennifer Brady and Maureen Tobin Stanley.
Tuesday, November 17th, 10-11 am - Panel discussion of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Several WLC professors will share information about bringing international education into the classroom through technology. Presenters: Dana Lindaman, French Studies; Andrew Snustad, Spanish Studies; Aparna Katre, Cultural Entrepreneurship; and Dan Nolan, German Studies.
Tuesday, November 17, 11-12 am: Meet UMD Language and Culture professors, a Zoom drop-in where you can ask questions about majors/minors, study abroad programs and more.
Tuesday, November 17th or Wednesday, Nov 18th, 12-1 pm: Study Abroad 101: a chance to talk to a student who has studied abroad about their experiences and ask questions.
Tuesday, November 17th, 1-2 pm: Presentation: International Education and How it May Be Used as an Anti-Racist Tool, with Dr. Harvey Charles, Professor of International Education at the University at Albany, SUNY.
Tuesday, November 17th or Wednesday, November 18th, 6-7 pm: Study Abroad Panel: another chance to talk to people who have studied abroad in many different places, hear about their experiences and ask questions.
Wednesday, Nov 18th, 5-6 pm: Spanish Info Session: a chance to learn about the faculty-led programs in Salamanca, Spain, the Spanish Studies major/minor, and how studying Spanish can help your career goals.
Thursday, November 19th, 12-1 pm: Alworth Brown Bag: A Friendship Born in Argentina.
