UMD Theatre grad honored with Wisconsin Writers Award

Carol Dunbar’s debut novel, “The Net Beneath Us,” was honored with the Edna Ferber Fiction Book Award.

An alumnus of UMD’s Department of Theatre, Dunbar embarked on a completely new path in 2002 when she moved with her husband and daughter to a remote, off-the-grid home in Northern Wisconsin. Her novel, inspired by that experience, follows a year in the life of a woman raising two kids in the woods after her husband is in a logging accident.

A book release event for “The Net Beneath Us” was held at UMD’s Marshall Center for Performing Arts in Fall 2022.

“That launch event was an evening of pure magic after a long haul,” says Dunbar. “It was the coming together of so many good things—old friends, new students, community members, and the support of UMD staff—all of which reminded me that when we create, we are less alone."

The Wisconsin Writers Awards was established in 1964 and is Wisconsin’s longest-running literary award for published work.
