A graphic design class is hosting a Facebook live fundraiser for the Domiano Center at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28, auctioning off items collected from Twin Ports businesses.
The 15 students are in Assistant Professor David Short’s Senior Graphic Design class.
Student Benjamin Wedel explains that his group chose the Damiano Center, a Duluth non-profit that provides essential services. “Our main goal is to raise more than $2-thousand dollars for the Damiano Center. We also want to raise awareness for what it does, and build a stronger community that lifts each other up and supports those in need.”
Their exhibition is Hand-In-Hand and, in addition to the Facebook live fundraiser, it also includes a GoFundMe page and the sale of digital art designed by the students.
Effort Recalibrated
This is the third year that Short’s classes have participated in a fundraiser exhibition.
Usually the exhibits are hosted in the Tweed Museum of Art as a competition between his Senior Design Studio 2 course to see which group can raise the most money for their respective Twin Ports not-for-profit. “The project focuses on being a strong localized impact for groups not traditionally supported by national means, and to function as a fully self-empowered group,” he says.
After Governor Walz’s executive stay-at-home order, Short switched to remote learning. Projects were already underway, so students decided to recalibrate. “They understand that the nonprofits they're supporting are severely impacted in these times.”
“We wanted to continue building the community so we knew we could not sit idle,” adds Wedel. “Working as a team to build the Hand-In-Hand event has been tremendous work but extremely rewarding to be able to make a difference in people's lives!”
