Women in Music Education

The UMD Music Education program is hosting a Women in Music Education series.

 

The events, which are free and open to the public, feature prominent musician-educators. Presenters will give sessions on Ojibwe songs and digital song writing. UMD Music Education professors Jian-Jun Chen-Edmund and David Edmund organized this series.

Sheila J. Feay-Shaw is an associate professor and chair of music education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dr. Feay-Shaw specializes in world music pedagogy in music education and has presented conference sessions for state, national and international conferences in Glasgow, Scotland; Edmonton, Alberta; Toronto, and Bergen, Norway.

Dr. Holmes is an associate professor and the coordinator of music education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In addition to her research and teaching, Alena Holmes is a singer and songwriter performing in educational, professional, and community contexts throughout the U.S.

Dr. Jill Wilson is associate professor and music education program director at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.  She is currently serving as Vice President of Iowa Choral Directors Association and is a member of the Iowa Fine Arts Standards Implementation Committee of the Iowa Department of Education.

Teaching Instrumental Music

Dr. Catharine  Bushman joined the faculty at St. Cloud State University in 2013. She conducts the wind ensemble and teaching courses in music education. Her academic interests include Igor Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments, cultural issues in music education, and music teacher mentoring.
