Jian-Jun Chen-Edmund and David Edmund present “Establishing Solidarity Through Music: Social, Cultural, and Educational Values in a Caribbean Community” in October for the 2021 Cultural Diversity in Music Education (CDIME) conference.

Jian-Jun Chen-Edmund and David Edmund will present for the 2021 Cultural Diversity in Music Education (CDIME) conference. The event is hosted by North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa. It will occur online as a blended (asynchronous / synchronous) event throughout the month of October, 2021. This project was made possible through the Edmunds’ collaboration with the Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. 

Edmund bios

Dr. David Edmund is Associate Professor and Chair of Music Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. His research interests include pedagogy of musical creativity, music for exceptional learners, and social constructs of music education. David is a past chair of the MN Society for Music Teacher Education. He has presented research in Canada, Europe, East Asia, South America, Africa, and throughout the United States. Prior to a ten year career teaching elementary general music, choir and beginning band in Florida, David earned the Master of Music Education degree (Jazz Studies emphasis) at the University of North Texas.. He has toured and recorded with chamber winds, jazz, reggae, soul, pop, and rock ensembles.

Dr. Jian-Jun Chen-Edmund is Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Her research areas of interest include world music pedagogy and assessment in music education. She has presented research and conducted conference workshops internationally, nationally, and regionally. Dr. Chen-Edmund has authored book chapters for the Oxford Handbook on Assessment Policy and Practice in Music Education and the Oxford handbook of Philosophical and Qualitative Assessment in Music Education. She has published in International Symposia on Assessment in Music Education Proceedings. She served as chair for the MN Society for Research in Music Education and as an Artist Initiative Music panelist for the Minnesota State Arts Board. Dr. Chen-Edmund received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida and M.A. degree from Teachers College, Columbia University.
