Writing Studies Alum Works to Make Healthcare Available for All

When Chance Lasher decided to combine a minor in Environmental Studies with a major in Writing Studies, he had his eyes on the world-building of the fiction writer. His knowledge of the natural world, and the systems we have built within it, would complement his skills as a writer as he worked on his novel.

After graduation, he’s using systems-thinking to make the world a better place for the rural residents of northeastern Minnesota.

While still a student, Lasher secured an internship with Wilderness Health. There, he learned process mapping – the skill of observing how work gets done in the world, with an eye toward improving the processes and procedures that support that work.

He went into Lake View clinic in Two Harbors, MN, and produced a process map for how patients are served by clinic staff. Then, he produced a new process map integrating telehealth into the clinic’s practices. Now, he’s applying his writing skills to promoting health throughout northeastern Minnesota, including a recent article in Lake County Press about the ways that “Carrying Naloxone saves lives.”

According to Chance,

“I’m glad my skills as a writer can further Telehealth usage and help address the sobering reality of Northeast Minnesota’s mental health crisis. Such problems drive me to explore more about the local, state, and federal healthcare systems. There is always more to learn.”
