The University of Minnesota- Duluth Chamber Orchestra departs from Minnesota on January 2nd and arrives in the Port of Spain Airport at 12:23 AM. Over the course of their stay in Trinidad and Tobago, they will have multiple rehearsals at the National Academy for the Performing Arts and a concert there on Jan 7th. They will also perform at the Christ Church in Cascade (Jan 5th), the University of the West Indies - St. Augustine Campus (Jan 9th), US Ambassador in Port of Spain (at the US Embassy) Monday Jan. 9. and the University of the Southern Caribbean (Jan 10th).
The UMD Chamber Orchestra consists of a highly selective group of up to 16 string players. The Chamber Orchestra rehearses twice a week and performs 2 to 3 concerts per year. This string-only ensemble explores the great masterpieces of chamber orchestra literature. Through collaboration with other national and international institutions, students in the orchestras gain a global perspective. They have been guest directed by prominent international conductors, and have performed alongside students and professionals from Italy, France, Russia, Haiti, China, Korea and Turkey.
Our goal is to continue those international ventures in an effort to expose our students to the highest possible standards of excellence. Our orchestras are dedicated to performing the works of great composers, past and present, to a new generation of musicians and audiences.
The Chamber Orchestra will perform Plainte nocturne #1 by Werner Jaegerhuber, Sous la tonnelle by Ludovic Lamothe and arranged by John Jost, Ice caverns Elly Tveita (UMD Class of ‘24), Plainte nocturne #2 by Werner Jaegerhuber and String symphony #7 in d by Felix Mendelssohn at their concerts.
