In June, Dr. Ryan Bergstrom (Program in Geography), was invited to give a lecture at Nordregio in Stockholm, Sweden. Nordregio is a Nordic and European research center that focuses on regional development and planning, with an emphasis on solution-oriented, applied research. The invitation was extended based on their Remote Communities and Resource Based Industries (REGINA) initiative, that aims to support rural and remote communities in the Arctic who are facing large-scale industrial development. Dr. Bergstrom spoke about the parallels between social, economic, and environmental challenges and opportunities on the Iron Range of Minnesota, and similar operations in Swedish Lapland. Ryan highlighted the Cuyuna Country State Recreational Area near Crosby, Minnesota, where local-grassroots efforts have transformed the former mining site into a thriving mountain biking destination.
