HIST 3097 Internship Fall 2017

What is your major?
History major with a Museum Studies Certificate

Where was your internship placement?
I'm a collections intern at the Richard I Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior, WI. The Mission of the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center is to preserve and honor the memory of Major Bong and all veterans of World War II as well as subsequent conflicts and to provide educational resources for the Twin Ports area community and beyond.

What did your general duties involve?
As a collections intern I work with Briana, the Curator of Collections at the Bong center, helping with many different projects from using museum software to catalog objects, helping design the new Richard I Bong medals display, and researching new items under review for accession into the collection.

What was your most memorable experience?
One of my favorite projects this semester has been designing a new temporary exhibit called the "Veteran of the Month" exhibit. I was able to go through our collection and highlight two really cool people who served during WWII from the Twin Ports area and put together an exhibit using their uniforms and other items they had donated to the museum.

Has your internship influenced your career path?
This internship has definitely convinced me that a career in museum work is something I am very passionate about and something I will continue to strive for in my education. I am now applying to Master degree programs to continue studying museums and public history.
