English MA Program Goals

Goal 1. Our graduates will possess knowledge of the disciplinary core as constituted through their individual emphases in the program.

 

 

Outcome 1: Our students will demonstrate broad disciplinary competence in reading and analysis  of a range of representative texts per their particular emphasis.
[The program assesses its fulfillment of this outcome by examining the Comprehensive Exam Reading Lists.]

 

Goal 2. Our graduates will conduct research in the field.

Outcome 2: Our students will prepare a research paper in accordance with professional standards for presentation of evidence appropriate to the topic.
[The program assesses its fulfillment of this outcome by examining the Plan B Projects.]


Goal 3. Our graduates will communicate effectively.

Outcome 3: Our students will present their ideas and engage in dialogue with experts on a topic of their own choosing, with an appropriate scope of investigation and a persuasive argument.
[The program assesses its fulfillment of this outcome by examining the Plan B Projects.]


Goal 4. Our graduates will individually initiate and collaboratively articulate ideas toward a negotiated understanding of concepts

Outcome 4: Our students will initiate ideas, defend them, and dialogue with experts in the areas emphasized in their program.
[The program assesses its fulfillment of this outcome by examining the Plan B Projects and the Comprehensive Exam process.]

 

Goal 5. Our graduates will contextualize their scholarship among other experts in the field.

Outcome 5: Our students will analyze and contextualize their ideas among a range of scholarly opinions and contributions regarding a primary text of importance to their emphasis.
