Laure Charleux
Professional Title
Associate Professor & Director of the GIS Program

I am a geographer and data scientist: I specialize in the analysis and visualization of spatial and spatiotemporal data. My specific field of study has been daily mobility behavior, and understanding how mobility behaviors are extensively shaped by social, spatial, and temporal constraints. Prior to coming to UMD, I was faculty at the Institute for Alpine Geography in Grenoble, France, until 2011.

My current work focuses on promoting and advancing the reach of GIS both in research and education. This includes working with my awesome team at UMD to build and maintain a strong and innovative GIS academic program that is anchored in our growing local GIS professional community. I am also collaborating with colleagues and students across disciplines, notably as a graduate faculty in the Water Resources Science program. On a wider stage, I am facilitating the formalization of new GIS knowledge, as the editor for the new "Programming & Development" knowledge area of the GIS&T Body of Knowlege, an evolving reference and guide for a growing discipline and field.

In addition, as a TRELIS fellow, I am committed to supporting women's careers in GIS and other tech fields.
