The ability to adapt to the changing job market will be essential for students. Students will need to acquire skills to adapt, be marketable and stay employed. Jobs require a skill set that isn’t just limited to technical knowledge. They require good interpersonal communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills all of which are best emphasized within the liberal arts. Most majors within our collegiate unit require a second field of study either a minor or second major. This allows students to complement their major with a different area of study. Here is an overview of the business opportunities within our unit. Contact our Advising office for more details.
In addition, students with a business interest can select from a variety of business minors offered through the Labovitz School of Business & Economics (LSBE) Advising office. Review the UMD business degree prerequisites for most LSBE degrees. Students are advised to contact the LSBE Advising office for more information.
Here are the LSBE pre-business major requirements for most LSBE majors: (effective fall 2018)
* Accounting minor offers training for entry into positions in government, industry, and social service organizations that require an understanding of accounting.
** Business Administration minor provides supplemental business education for students seeking degrees in programs other than business or accounting.
* Economics minor provides a basic overview of economics for students interested in a complementary discipline with political science or international studies.
* Finance minor provides a comprehensive overview of the theories and common practices in corporate finance, investment and portfolio management, and the management of financial institutions.
*² Financial Planning minor is designed to be a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) board-registered program so it can be used to fulfill the education requirements for the CFP certification. Upon completion of this program, students are eligible to sit for the CFP Board of Standard certification examination, leading to the professional CFP designation.
* Health Care Management minor teaches students about the health care system and how to apply management, economic, and legal methods to solve health care service problems.
* Management minor (subplans: human resources OR organizational) provides a general overview of theories and practices which adds value to the business education of students.
* Management Information Systems minor provides a general overview of the design, implementation and management of information systems in business.
* Marketing minor is about facilitating exchanges. This minor complements the communication major.
*² Marketing Analytics minor is designed for students with strong mathematics and statistics backgrounds. The marketing analytics minor builds upon these quantitative skills and develops data analysis skills and business knowledge.
