CAHSS Professors receive Chancellor’s Awards

English, Linguistics, & Writing Studies faculty Rebecca Boyle and Burke Scarbrough will receive the Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Outstanding Public Service for 2024-25.

The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes faculty who have made contributions to the teaching mission of UMD that are of extraordinary quality and reflect UMD’s emphasis on high quality undergraduate and graduate education.

Professor Boyle — Creative Writing Certificate Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor in English, Linguistics, & Writing Studies (ELWS)— hails from Maine, and has been a member of UMD’s College of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences faculty since 2013. Boyle is currently working with students in Honors Advanced Writing to publish Aisthesis, UMD’s annual interdisciplinary honors journal.

The Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Public Service is given to a faculty member who has demonstrated extraordinary and sustained commitment to public service and community engagement.

Associate Professor of English Education, and ELWS Department Head, Burke Scarbrough says, “I moved from K-12 education into higher education with the goal of expanding my service to classroom teachers and the students they serve; it was a promise I made myself.”

“I'm thrilled to have a position at UMD that supports my working closely with teachers in the Northland, and I'm grateful to the professional communities I've found with the Minnesota and National Councils of Teachers of English (MCTE and NCTE) that enable me to make an even broader impact,” said Scarbrough. “It's touching to be honored by my UMD colleagues, and it's humbling to see my hard-working partners in this service speak up on my behalf!”

Professors Boyle and Scarbrough will be recognized at an all-campus awards ceremony on April 17th.
