UMD announces dean of College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

The University of Minnesota Duluth announces Anne Stevens to lead CAHSS.

Anne Stevens, PhD, has accepted the position of dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), pending final approval from the Board of Regents.

“Dr. Stevens brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to UMD,” Rebecca Ropers, UMD’s executive vice chancellor and provost, said. “As a strong leader, scholar, educator, community partner, and student advocate, Anne will continue to strengthen the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and the UMD and Minnesota communities.”

Stevens most recently served as dean of the College of Public Affairs and Education and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where she had previously served as dean of the College of Letters and Science and as a professor of English.

“I am thrilled to be joining the University of Minnesota Duluth and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences,” Dr. Stevens said. “I look forward to working with the incredible team of faculty, staff and students at UMD as we work toward the future of our college and campus.”

Stevens was previously professor of English and chair of the department of Interdisciplinary, Gender, and Ethnic Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she had served since 2004. She received her BA in English from the University of Chicago and PhD in English from New York University.

She is the author of British Historical Fiction before Scott (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and Literary Theory and Criticism: An Introduction (Broadview, 2015; revised second edition 2021) and the co-editor, with Molly C. O’Donnell, of The Microgenre: A Quick Look at Small Culture (Bloomsbury, 2020). She has published articles in the Journal of General Education, Critical Inquiry, Studies in Eighteenth-Century Culture, and elsewhere.

Dr. Stevens’ appointment begins June 29 pending final approval by the Board of Regents.

Dr. Jennifer Brady has served as interim dean of CAHSS since 2024, and has strengthened the college’s culture, resources, innovation, and recognition. We want to thank her for her service to the college and to the University of Minnesota Duluth.
